Through the Child’s Eyes: Creating Responsive Classrooms Through Observation, Interaction, and Belonging by Lori Kowit, M.A.

Through the Child’s Eyes is an interactive professional learning experience that invites early childhood educators to view the classroom from a child’s perspective. Every element—from the environment and daily routines to an educator’s words, responses, and positioning—communicates powerful messages about belonging, capability, and whose ideas matter.

Participants will explore how intentional environments, meaningful relationships, responsive interactions, and authentic family partnerships influence children’s engagement, independence, learning, and sense of belonging. Educators will examine practical ways to observe before assuming, join children’s play without taking over, listen to understand, and extend learning without directing it.

Participants will leave with research-informed, immediately applicable strategies for slowing down, seeing the child in front of them, and creating classrooms where every child feels seen, heard, valued, connected, and included.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Analyze a classroom environment or routine from a child’s perspective and identify at least two ways it communicates belonging, capability, independence, or inclusion, as demonstrated through a scenario-based assessment.

2. Differentiate among observing, joining, listening, and extending, and select the most responsive educator strategy for a given classroom interaction, as measured by a post-webinar assessment.

3. Apply information gathered through observation and family partnerships to select an appropriate responsive change to an environment, interaction, routine, or learning experience, as measured by a scenario-based post-webinar assessment.
