Learning Beyond the Fence: Safe and Meaningful Nature-Based Learning Outside the Fenced Play Area by Dr. Rachel Larimore

Nature-based early childhood education is a growing approach that prioritizes children’s experiences learning with nature. These experiences can take place indoors, outdoors, and in spaces beyond the fence. Adding nature indoors or natural materials to the outdoor play area are typically the first steps toward a nature-based approach. Eventually, however, programs may begin considering venturing beyond the fenced play area into more wild spaces.

In this session, Dr. Rachel Larimore will focus on safely exploring areas outside the fence while also creating meaningful learning experiences. Related to safety, we’ll address licensing regulations, conducting benefit-risk assessments, and establishing protocols for leaving the fence. Related to pedagogy, we’ll discuss how to structure time, the physical environment, and teacher-child interactions to support both safety and meaningful learning. We’ll also discuss how to integrate experiences in the Beyond back into the indoor classroom.
