About this webinar
Sponsored by Nature Explore.
Join Dr Dean Tagawa, Ranae Amezquita, and Kirsten Haugen to learn how and why the second-largest school district in the United States has committed to creating natural outdoor classrooms in every one of its early care and education centers. The presenters will share California’s Los Angeles Unified School District multi-year journey to convert largely asphalt play areas into nature-rich outdoor classrooms with areas for activities including music and movement, block building, art, climbing and balancing and more. Building on key partnerships with natural learning environment experts and other vital community stakeholders to fund, build, and sustain these natural learning spaces has yielded an impressive model for early care and education organizations of all sizes to emulate.
Join us to learn how your organization can emulate LAUD’s audacious approach by following their footsteps to:
Develop a collaborative approach across departments and divisions
Build support and funding from the board and private foundations
Ensure equity while allowing each site to reflect its own community and culture
Address and solve unexpected challenges
Work effectively with architects and contractors
Implement high quality professional development
Sustain outdoor classrooms by supporting site leadership
Involve families and enrich neighborhoods
Contribute to research on the efficacy of nature-rich outdoor learning environments
Rely on Outdoor Classrooms in responding to challenges including ACES and the pandemic.
