About this webinar
This session is sponsored by Nemours Bright Start!
Mastering the basics of at least one language is the central challenge of the toddler years. Toddlers learn the power -- and fun -- of words, and use them not only to communicate and label, but to question, think, learn, play, and pretend, as well as to control their own and others emotions and behavior. Toddlers who learn well gain an increasing edge -- socially, emotionally, and intellectually. In this webinar, we will examine fascinating recent research on how adults help toddlers to learn language well. Using the "5 Rs" framework to organize these discoveries, we will explore their implications for early childhood program policies and teaching practices. We will look at a variety of strategies for optimizing the "5 Rs" in our conversations with toddlers, maximizing Responsiveness to the child and Richness of vocabulary and information, introducing new information at a Rate the child can process and learn from, making the Referents of new words clear, and providing enough Repetition and variation for new words, phrases, concepts and stories to stick. We will also discuss ways in which lead teachers, coaches, and administrators can support these strategies through resources, routines, rituals, and reflective engagement of educators and families, as well as through policies related to scheduling, group size, and the language(s) adults use as they engage children in play, conversation, and learning.
All sessions are 1.5 hours long, and include a brief announcement from our sponsor.
