How Perspective-Taking Nurtures Empathy, Kindness, & Justice in ECE

What the world needs now is a large dose of benevolence and altruism. How do early childhood educators contribute to this aspirational vision of a better world? The first thing you can do is learn how to introduce the foundations of these characteristics into your classroom. Join us to explore the stories of three experienced early childhood educators and their mentor who have created early childhood environments and experiences that nurture kindness, empathy, and perspective-taking. You will learn how to apply the principles adapted from Quaker values, social justice movements, and mindfulness practice in your classroom or program to support learning in a just and equitable environment. The authors will share the learning journeys in their classrooms as they grow from toddlers to rising kindergarteners.

The teachers, Makai Kellogg, Magy Youssef, and Sabina Zeffler, and their mentor, Jacky Howell will share insights from their new book, Reflection, Perspective-Taking, and Social Justice: Stories of Empathy and Kindness in the Early Childhood Classroom, as they coach you to embrace the principles you need to guide children become mindful of and empathetic toward other people’s perspectives. In this webinar, you will learn:

• the benefits of pets in the classroom to foster young children's perspective-taking as part of their social/emotional development

• ways to intentionally use children's literature as part of the curriculum that can incorporate guiding principles from Black Lives Matter which includes empathy

• the importance of listening and holding space with young children

• ways to incorporate conversations and stories among educators with a mentor/coach as a way to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves

All sessions are 1.5 hours long and include a brief announcement from our sponsor.
