State Requirements
The information below is provided by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission Renewal Requirements
6 semester hours of college coursework or 10 Georgia Professional Learning Units (PLUs) or 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or 100 hours of BFTS-approved training.
Georgia teachers need to fulfill any of the professional development requirements listed above or hold a valid National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification in order to renew their teaching license or certificate.
Specific regulations include:
College coursework must be earned at an institution that meets the accreditation standards outlined in GaPSC Rule 505-2-.31.
PLUs must be awarded by a State of Georgia education agency, a Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA), a Georgia LUA, or a GaPSC-approved college or university.
CEUs must be issued by a GaPSC-accepted accredited college or university or a provider authorized by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).
Georgia’s Pre-K Program teachers (both lead and assistant) must attend **DECAL-mandated training each school year**, with required sessions based on experience level, covering topics like early literacy, classroom management, and child assessment.
Unlike child care or Pre-K, certified early childhood educators in Georgia’s public schools renew their teaching certificates every 5 years by completing job-embedded professional learning through a district-approved plan or, if unemployed, by earning college credits or CEUs.
