About this webinar
Picky eating is common in early childhood and can be a source of stress for both caregivers and educators. While pressure, persuasion, and “just try a bite” approaches are often used to encourage children to eat, these strategies can sometimes increase resistance and make mealtimes more challenging.
In this session, Yev Veverka, Ph.D., of the University of Washington draws on her expertise in early childhood special education and Applied Behavior Analysis to share practical strategies for supporting young children who are selective eaters.
Participants will learn how to reduce mealtime pressure, create environments that support children’s sense of safety and autonomy, and use simple strategies that encourage curiosity and food exploration. The presentation will focus on realistic approaches that can be implemented in early learning settings and at home to help children participate more comfortably in mealtimes.
Learning Objectives:
Describe common developmental and environmental factors that contribute to picky eating in early childhood.
Identify ways that well-intentioned mealtime pressure can unintentionally increase food refusal or reduce participation in mealtimes.
Understand how to implement practical strategies that support positive mealtime environments and encourage food exploration.
Recognize ways educators and caregivers can collaborate to support children who are selective eaters.
For those looking to go deeper, Yev’s previous session, Nourishing Connections: A Proactive Approach to Mealtimes in Your Classroom, is also available to rewatch for added context and practical strategies.
