State Requirements

The information below is provided by the [Virginia Law Administrative code 8VAC20-23-110. Requirements for renewing a license https://law.lis.virginia.gov/admincode/title8/agency20/chapter23/section110/#:~:text=2.,and high-quality professional development.

To renew an early childhood education teaching license in Virginia, educators must complete either 180 professional development (PD) points for a 5-year license or 270 points for a 10-year license. These points can be earned through approved activities like college coursework, conferences, mentoring, and educational projects. Additionally, several statutory trainings are required with every renewal cycle.

Acceptable PD activities:

College Credit

  • Semester hour = 30 points; quarter hour = 20 points

Professional Conferences

  • 5 points per day (minimum 4 hours)

Curriculum Development

  • 1 point per hour (must be ≥ 5 hours) .

Publication of Article

  • Up to 90 points total; 45 per published piece

Publication of Book

  • Up to 90 points total; 90 for each eligible published book

Mentorship or Supervision

  • Up to 90 points (e.g., serving as mentor or field supervisor)

Educational Projects

  • Up to 90 points for structured, school-related projects
