You don’t often hear the word “democratic” when thinking about young children in preschool. But in fact, everything you do (or do not do) in your early learning program can impact children’s ability to become dynamic problem solvers who engage with others well and otherwise participate in democratic society. As you guide children (in a safe and democratic classroom environment) to build relationships, regulate their emotions, tolerate differences, and understand fairness, you are helping them build Democratic Life Skills (DLS). This webinar will include a lot of information about how to help children get along and help teachers guide their behavior because this not only solves problems in the classroom but also helps children become good citizens of a civil society.
Presented by renowned child guidance expert and author, Dan Gartrell, Ed.D., this session will focus on the development of Five Democratic Life Skills based on his newly revised book, Education for a Civil Society: Teaching Young Children to Gain Five Democratic Life Skills, published by NAEYC. Dan will share insights about how to support children as they build the skills and how to build early childhood communities that reflect DAP for all. You will learn how to establish and maintain secure relationships with children, co-workers, and family members in this community where children gain the Five Skills.
Dan asserts that for children to develop the Five Skills, staff must also possess them so they can use intervention guidance, which calms and teaches rather than punishes. He will guide you to use intervention practices like guidance talks, conflict mediation, intervention group meetings, and comprehensive guidance–all using a general social problem-solving approach that he calls the Five Finger Formula.
Join this webinar to:
- Analyze Five Democratic Life Skills and the importance of teaching for them in early childhood education.
- Assess why the two Safety Needs Skills must be gained by children before they can progress with the three Growing Needs Skills
- Recognize how Developmental and Intervention Guidance supports and nudges children to gain the 5 DLS.
- Ascertain how D.A.P. is central to the Encouraging Early Learning Community, the use of Developmental and Intervention Guidance, and teaching for the Five DLS.
- Visualize how teaching children to gain the DLS provides the foundations for individuals to be able to sustain our complex democratic society.
