About this webinar

Erikson TEC Center

This session is sponsored by Erikson Institute's TEC Center – an innovative online community dedicated to the effective, appropriate, and intentional use of technology and interactive media as tools with young children.

Like pencils, digital technologies are tools. And like pencils, knowing how to use digital devices is part of being literate, but it isn’t enough. In the digital world, where technology provides easy access to nearly unlimited information and resources, we need to expand the traditional “three Rs” to include reasoning and reflection. And we need to do so in ways that foster curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. That’s what media literacy education does when we integrate it along with new technologies.

Using a literacy and inquiry-based pedagogy that is curriculum driven, Faith Rogow, PhD, founding President of the National Association for Media Literacy Education and author of The Teacher’s Guide to Media Literacy, will share developmentally appropriate techniques for teaching digital and media literacy.

She will offer strategies for how to:

• Help children (and adults!) develop language and improve communication skills using digital media

• Use media technologies to spark rich learning conversations

• Help children (as young as three) use questions, comparisons, and careful observations to think about the media they encounter

• Develop customized lessons that integrate digital and media literacy into your site or classroom

• Soften resistance from parents and professionals.

The webinar’s overarching goal will be to provide answers to people who are looking for ways to put the recent NAEYC/FRC position statement on technology into action.

All sessions are 1.5 hours long, and include a brief announcement from our sponsor. 2:oo PM – 3:30 PM Eastern Time. See the schedule of upcoming webinars
