ECE Tech Trends in 2012, New Directions for 2013, and Why Tech Integration Matters- A TEC Conversation with Warren Buckleitner

Warren Buckleitner, Editor of Children’s Technology Review, and Chip Donohue, Director of the TEC Center at Erikson Institute, will talk about technology trends, issues, and opportunities for early childhood educators and young children in 2012, and gaze into a virtual crystal ball to predict the most important and influential trends and technology innovations for 2013. Hear about the latest and best technology tools, apps and media, and learn about effective practices for including technology in your teaching practices and integrating technology into your environment, curriculum and routines.

Warren and Chip will also lead a conversation about the importance of integrating technology into early childhood environments, curriculum and routines to meet the goals and principles of the new joint position statement on technology from NAEYC and the Fred Rogers Center. An essential principle in the NAEYC/Fred Rogers Center Joint Position Statement on Technology and Interactive Media as Tools in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8 is that “Technology and media can enhance early childhood practice when integrated into the environment, curriculum, and daily routines.” Warren will describe what technology integration means and what it looks like in an early childhood classroom, and he’ll discuss how technology integration is related to the quality of children’s experience and level of engagement, and effective choices and uses of technology and interactive media as tools with young children. Technology integration involves the effective, appropriate and intentional use of technology and interactive media in daily classroom practices. Integration occurs when the use of technology and media becomes routine and transparent – when the focus of a child or educator is on the activity or exploration itself and not on the technology or media being used. When the use of technology and media supports the goals of educators and programs for children, provides children with digital tools for learning and communicating, and helps to improve child outcomes, technology has been successfully integrated into the environment, curriculum and daily routine.
