What is the purpose of our work as educators? Our answer to that question sets our course and becomes our compass.
What if we understand that our work is to cultivate and sustain a culture of collaborative, substantive inquiry in our classrooms?
When we shift our focus from instruction to inquiry—from teaching to thinking—we commit ourselves to the humility of listening, the rigor of researching, and to creating possibilities rather than pursuing predefined outcomes. We understand that curriculum is a complex and evolving dialogue among educators, children, and families. Our planning is anchored by children’s innovative, creative, and collaborative capacities, by our careful attention and thoughtful reflection, and by our willingness to be challenged and changed by our experiences with children and families. We create classrooms that are lively with the exchange of theories and questions, classrooms that sing with the pleasure of discovery.
During our webinar, we will explore the skills, dispositions, and practices that help us grow a culture of inquiry in our classrooms, anchored by the ideas we explore our recent book, From Teaching to Thinking: A Pedagogy for Reimagining Our Work (Exchange Press, 2018). This webinar will take the form of an informal conversation between Margie Carter, Ann Pelo, and Fran Simon, and will include the opportunity for webinar participants to ask questions.
Learning objectives:
- The webinar will sustain and nourish participants’ intellect, imagination, and determination, to fortify them as they navigate the press of standards and accountability, holding to a vision of early childhood education that is an energizing, co-constructed adventure into learning—for children and adults.
- Participants will connect with their longings and dreams for their work, and will linger with the question, “What do you want to be known for?”
- The webinar will challenge participants to stay conscious of the values, cultural frameworks, and personal experiences that shape their daily work.
- Participants will understand their work as the practice of collaborative research, undertaken with children, families, and colleagues, rather than instruction or supervision or assessment.
