Harsh immigration policies undermine the safety, health, and overall development of young children in immigrant families, the vast majority of whom are U.S. citizens. New and proposed immigration policies—including increased immigration enforcement actions–have threatened the well-being of millions of children, threatening to separate them from their parents and to cut them off from critical health and nutrition assistance. This power webinar, presented by Wendy Cervantes, Dr. Michael McNeil and Hannah Matthews will discuss how the recent executive orders and other immigration policy proposals impact young children in immigrant families and what early childhood providers can do to help support their students and families who may be at risk. Speakers will provide a first-hand perspective on how immigration policies can impact a child’s long-term mental and physical health. The webinar will also provide an overview current early childhood policies and immigrant eligibility rules as well as recent immigration policy changes that directly impact children. Speakers will also share strategies and new resources to help child care and early education providers support children and families, including how to keep their programs safe from immigration enforcement and help families cope and prepare for possible deportation.
Participants will learn:
- how immigration policies harm a child’s mental and physical health
- current early childhood policies and immigrant eligibility rules
- how recent immigration policy changes impact young children
- how to help families cope and prepare for possible deportation
