Dan is a former Head Start teacher for the Red Lake Ojibwe in Minnesota. During the 1970s, Dan was a CDA advisor for the Child Development Training Program at Bemidji State University. Dan received his doctoral degree in 1977. For nearly 40 years, Dan was director of CDTP and professor of ECE at Bemidji State. For ten years Dan wrote the “Guidance Matters” column for YOUNG CHILDREN. He has written or co-written about 30 articles that have appeared in early childhood journals. He is the author of six editions of a textbook, A Guidance Approach for the Encouraging Classroom, as well as six other books on guidance in ECE His newest book, Education for a Civil Society: Teaching Young Children to Gain Five Democratic Life Skills (Revised Edition) has recently been released by NAEYC. This is the third book by Dan that NAEYC has selected as a Premium Membership benefit. The old duffer professor has presented over 300 workshops, keynotes, trainings, and symposia in many states, Germany, and Mexico.
