This webinar will be presented by Chip Donohue, Director of the TEC Center (Technoogy in Early Childhood) at Erikson Institute and editor of the new Routledge and NAEYC publication, Technology and Digital Media in the Early Years: Tools for Teaching and Learning. The book is a collection of essays by 25 thought-leaders working at the intersection of child development, early learning and children’s media and offers a variety of perspectives on appropriate and intentional use of technology and digital media in the early years, technology in the classroom, and technology beyond the classroom. Key topics include: Social/emotional development; Best practices in teacher preparation; What Maria Montessori would say about the iPad; Summary of the research; Media literacy; Technology integration; Early literacy; Dual Language Learners; UDL approach to a technology-supported curriculum; STEM; Technology tools for teachers and teaching; Innovative practices and emerging technologies; Strengthening the home-school connection; Strengthening communities; Informal learning environments; and the connected educator.
Chip will highlight the common themes, big ideas, best practices and future directions identified by the contributing authors to address what we know, what we still need to learn and why it matters. Key messages will be aligned with the NAEYC and Fred Rogers Center Joint Position Statement on Technology and Interactive Media as Tools in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8. Teacher takeaways, practical tips and implications for early childhood educators about selection, use, integration and evaluation or technology and digital media in the early years will be shared. Resources and inks from the book will be provided. Participants will be encouraged to share their questions, experiences and best practices during the webinar through the backchannel and polls and during the Q&A at the end.
