This session is sponsored by Nemours Bright Start!
Dual language learners (DLLs), one of the largest growing populations in the U.S., will enter classrooms with little to no exposure to the English language. To successfully, gain proficiency in English, they will require explicit and systematic instruction in both the home language and the new language. Are you familiar with strategies that support DLLs in each stage of language development? Are you creating purposeful and intentional learning experiences that foster English language acquisition?
Based on the planning guide, 10 Best Practices for Developing Book Experiences for Dual Language Learners, this webinar will support early childhood educators as they improve overall academic success with language and literacy development. Join Vera Meyerholtz as she explores simple and effective tips designed to differentiate instruction, engage dual language learners in critical thinking, strengthen the use of newly learned words and promote literacy development during an interactive book experience. Learn to create purposeful and intentional books experiences that offer dual language learners many opportunities to:
• build receptive and expressive vocabulary skills
• develop comprehension skills
• participate in back-and-forth conversation
• become a part of the story
• excite creativity and imaginations
• connect new ideas and concepts to personal experiences
Learning Outcomes:
I. Create book experiences that are culturally and developmentally appropriate for dual language learners
II. Maximize opportunities for language and literacy development before, during and after a book experience
III. Apply proven strategies to ensure improved achievement among listening, speaking and comprehension skills
IV. Develop instructional activities that include and support dual language learners
